In 1961, Jose Sarria was the first openly gay man to run for public office in the United States -- and she ran in heels. Sarria, known as Empress I, Jose, the Widow Norton, also started the Imperial Court System in 1965, one of the first and largest LGBTQ nonprofits in the world.
